Description
The Roman Theatre of Merida was built in 16 BC by order of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, a General, Consul and friend of Emperor Augustus. The ancient theatre in the Roman city of Emerita Augusta, capital of Lusitania, housed up to 6,000 spectators. The theatre underwent several renovations, first at the end of the 1st Century or early 2nd Century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan when the current monumental architectural background (seen here) was erected. Another renovation was done in the time of Constantine the Great, between AD 330 and 340, which introduced new decorative-architectural elements and a walkway around the monument. Following the theatre’s abandonment in Late Antiquity, it was slowly covered with earth and only the upper tiers of seats remained visible. Excavations of the theatre began in 1910, and more excavations and rebuilding began in earnest in the latter half of the 20th century. Today, besides being an historic archeological site, the theatre has been home to the Festival of Classical Theatre of Mérida since 1933. The Mérida Classical Theatre Festival is the oldest of its kind celebrated in Spain, thus it has returned the theatre to its original function. The theatre is part of the archaeological ensemble of Mérida, one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. FUN FACT: The theatre was build in accordance to the precepts of Vitruvius, a 1st century BCE civil and military engineer, whose discussions of perfect proportions in architecture and the human body led to the famous Renaissance drawing (Vitruvian Man) by Leonardo Da Vinci.
